Through their efforts other Catholic settlers came and the town of Dougherty was founded. Father Feeley helped the Dougherty congregation begin a church in 1870, and Father Flannery directed its completion the next year. They named it for Saint Patrick. It is not a town, nor even a village, but a church site named for an abundance of wild cherry trees. The parish is named for Saint Pius V., a pope of the 16th century who worked for the reform of the Church. He is not to be confused with Saint Pius X, the 20th century pope who urged frequent Communion. While making his rounds of the Catholics in the Wexford area, Father Thomas Hore probably celebrated the first Mass in the area.
