<text>"In the southwest corner of Jackson County, between Maquoketa and Wyoming, the town of Fremont was platted in the center of Monmouth Township in 1859. Five years later, on May 5, 1864, Joseph J. Kopsa called a meeting of the area Catholics. He gave the land to the newly formed society that later became Saint John Bohemian Church. The name recognized that most of the members were of Czech ancestry. These settlers had been attending the Catholic Church in Onslow and then in their own homes when priests would visit the area from Cascade, Delmar, Garryowen, Hughes’ Settlement, and Oxford Junction. It is claimed that at least forty-five children were baptized in the old Ales homestead. They began building a stone church in 1864, and it was used for Mass before it was completed in 1871."<br /><br /> - Rev. Msgr. <text>"The German families in Dubuque asked Bishop Loras for permission to form a parish and built a small stone church at 8th and White Streets in 1851. Although named Holy Trinity, it was replaced in 1867 by the present Saint Mary Church at 15th and White Streets. Holy Trinity Parish came into being in 1909 when Father Arnold A. Boeding, the Sacred Heart pastor, asked Archbishop John J. Keane to create a new parish in the Eagle Point area of the city. Father Joseph A. Dupont, the Sacred Heart assistant, was appointed pastor. The parish was named Holy Trinity. Finding about 110 families in his care, Father Dupont chose the present location on Rhomberg Avenue. A committee headed by George Roepsch and Joseph Schlueter gave him valuable support and assisted in raising funds. When Father Dupont made the fund appeal, several parishes, many priests and businessmen, and a good number of parishioners responded, providing $30,000 in cash and $15,000 in pledges. Work began in early 1910. For the cornerstone laying, a long procession of 17 Catholic societies in colorful regalia proceeded from the Cathedral to the Rhomberg Avenue site." <br /><br />- Rev. Msgr. When Bishop Clement Smyth did not send a priest on the grounds that there was no church, John Heles and Joseph Friedman assumed leadership and a church was built in 1861 with Adolph Langel in charge of carpentry and John Maiers of masonry. Hand hewn oak beams supported the floor, and the pews were homemade. The church bell was donated by Francis and Rosa Roushar in 1891 and named Saint Francis. It now hands in the tower near the present church. About 1900, Father Peter Kloss succeeded Father Zlebcik at Norway and also cared for Holy Trinity. A majority of the parish agreed with Father Kloss the parish would be better served by rebuilding the church in Walford. Lumber salvaged from the dismantled church in the country was used. <text>This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.)</text>
