The number "227" is visible above the front door of the building. The building is a brick building that is 4 stories tall. The front door is two main, wooden doors with a glass window above that has the address of "227" on it. There is an arched stone above the doorway. To the left of the building is either an alley or an open, dirt area. There is a small walkway next to the building that leads to at least two doors in the side of the building. The street in front of the building is a brick road. There is a wooden post in the right side of the photograph with the words, "Look Out for the Cars." Also to the right of the building, in the background is another building that has signs on it that are not fully visible. One says, "A. Frater" and another is "es, Pelts, Woo" and the rest is cut off on either side. The right side of the building is cut off on the corner and angled back instead of a 90 degree angle at the corner. A majority of the windows on the front of the building are open. Among their productions were baking powder, coconut, chocolate, coffee, Cream of Tartar, toilet soaps, mustard, whole and ground spices, dry and liquid bluing, hops, pressed and ground sage, cinnamon, pepper, and ground cassia. The Key City Roller Mills or Rooster Feeds was a company that produced feed products. The large building says, "Key City Roller Mills" and "Use Rooster Flour." It is a 3-4 story building with a large smoke stack with black smoke coming from the top and blowing towards the left of the building. The building extends backwards with other offshoots of the building. There is also a building in the back that could be connected. There is a dirt road with tracks that lead out of the entrance to the right of the building. The building is 3-4 stories. There is a doorway up a set of stairs on the left side of the photograph and the side of the building. A man wearing light colored pants, a jacket, and hat stands in the doorway. The Church is to the right of the photograph and is on the corners of Windsor and 22nd Streets. There are two main steeples on the left and the right sides of the church and a cross in the center arched area. There are three entrances into the front of the church, one in the center and two on either side. There are trees and electrical poles in the front of the church along the sidewalk. The street has a track for a streetcar in the middle. To the left of the photograph is what appears to be a school. The steeple extends upwards in the square shape and has a point at the top. The main doors are on 10th St. where there are a set of stained glass windows above the doors and a circular stained glass window high above. There is a smaller and thinner steep shape to the right of the church as well that has a point at the top. On the left side of the Church on Locust St. there are four large, arched, stained glass windows. The House of the Good Shepherd was a home to rehabilitate and restore delinquent or neglected girls, aged 13-21. The buildings is a 4-5 story, red-brick building. The front door faces Alta Vista Street and there is a sidewalk that leads up to the front door. The front door is up 7 cement stairs and under a roof that has a cross on the top of the pointed pediment and the name "House of the Good Shepherd underneath the pediment as well as decorative cornices. Description An account of the resource This is a digital collection of the photographic works of Peter B. Hoffman, Jr. A Dubuque native, he was born on October 28, 1889 and was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery after he died on December 14, 1953. His parents were Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. and Katherine (Nickels) Hoffmann. His father's parents immigrated from Luxembourg to Ohio, where he was born, and shortly thereafter to Dubuque. Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr. was a grocer, historian and politician. His mother's parents immigrated directly from Luxembourg to Dubuque and were considered "pioneer" residents of the city. The couple had seven children: Edward M., Albert D., Alvina M., Frank Charle, Vincent, Bertha K., and Peter B. Jr. The family was Catholic. Peter B. Jr. married Barbara R. Bungert sometime between 1915 and 1925, and they had one daughter, Rosalyn Marie. Peter worked in his father's store as a grocer clerk and continued in the grocery business throughout his life; he was also drafted in WWI and WWII. Although he is never named as the person taking the photos, the pictures contain multiple images of Peter B. Hoffmann, Sr., leading to the conclusion that his son was the photographer. (Note: The name "Hoffmann" appears with both one and two "n"s throughout the family and newspaper accounts.) Hoffmann Jr's uncle, the brother of Peter B. Hoffmann Sr. John is wearing a collared jacket with a white shirt underneath the collared jacket. The jacket appears to have a thickness to it. John is also wearing a patterned tie or an Victorian style puff tie with a jewel tie pin/clip in the middle. His short hair is parted on the left side of his head. He is looking to the left of the photograph. He has a thick mustache that extends outwards of his mouth. The bottom and back of the photograph says, "John Hoffmann." The back also notes, "MacKenzie, Photographer, Cor. 17th and Clay Streets, Dubuque, Iowa." Clay St. is now Central Ave. in Dubuque.
