The church and cemetery were dedicated in June 1867, receiving the name Holy Cross. This log church served the community until 1875. Rohlman and Msgr. Bernard H. Skahill, pastor of Saint Mary’s. It was to be attached temporarily to Saint Mary’s. Property for the new parish was purchased in April 1954. The railroad tracks became the dividing line between the mother parish and daughter parish. A campaign begun in 1957 raised almost $400,000 in cash and pledges. On the feast of Saint Henry, July 15, 1959, the parish was founded and named for Archbishop Rohlman’s patron saint. The first pastor, Father Roger E. O’Brien, arrived July 19. Title A name given to the resource St. Boniface (New Vienna, Iowa) Description An account of the resource “Saint Boniface Parish traces its beginning to the first Mass offered in the village of New Vienna by Bishop Mathias Loras on Jan. 6, 1846. They were a community of 17 German families who had settled along the North Fork of the Maquoketa River about 30 miles northeast of Dubuque. In addition to Bishop Loras, a Dominican missionary by the name of Father G. J. Allemann and Father George Reffe cared for the new parish. He conducted open air forums in Monticello and surrounding communities and later moved to Monticello. The parish built a large frame church, which was swept away by the windstorm of October 8, 1878. As the number of settlers increased, they saw a need for a church. Then the death of a child was the occasion for Paul Roethler to donate a portion of land for church and cemetery, and that was evidently the beginning of Immaculate Conception Parish. It was not until 1863 that a church was built, the first Catholic church in the county.
