Soon after the Iowa Territory was opened to settlement in 1833, pioneers from Luxembourg in Europe took up residence on the fertile hills and valleys about ten miles south of Dubuque in the area of the stream named Tetes des Morts (Heads of Death) as a result of a war between Indians in the area. About 1851 a pastor changed the name of the gruesome title to a saint quite popular in the Luxembourger’s homeland. He was soon followed by Father Patrick McCabe as the first permanent pastor. In 1870 Father Roger Ryan began a forty-two year pastorate during which the parish grew in numbers and spirit. Keane asking permission to start a parish. There had been two parishes in the neighboring town of Norway. One of them began as a Czech parish, with the pastors serving the Czech Catholics in all directions. The other began as an Irish parish, which moved to Watkins when their church was destroyed by fire. By the time Father Meyer became their first resident pastor, most of the parish was German. Father Anthony D. Urban visited them while pastor of Spillville and celebrated the first Mass in the area in 1865 in the Matthew Kuenn home. Several times in 1865 Father William Emonds came from Iowa City to celebrate Mass in the public school. Title A name given to the resource St. Michael (Nashua, Iowa) Description An account of the resource “The Catholics of Nashua in Chickasaw County bought property and built a church in 1868. Before that, Mass was celebrated in the homes of the O’Donnells and the Doughertys. After forty years as a mission, the parish received its first resident pastor when Father William A. Kunkel was appointed in August 1903. He began the sacramental records. He at once set about having the church repaired and enlarged. In the summer of 1904 a rectory was built, and one room of the rectory was furnished as a school. About the same time, James McGregor gave the Catholic parish a parcel of land at the head of Main Street, where Father B. C. Linehan caused a school and Sister’s home ot be built in 1868.
