Loemker Collection Description Rev. Herman J. Loemker, a German-born pastor, served in eighteen German Methodist Episcopal churches in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and South Dakota from the 1880’s until his death in 1937. While he utilized lantern slides for temperance lectures, he also produced lantern slides illustrating the communities where he lived. He served as pastor of the German ME church in Dubuque from 1915 to 1917. Nearly 270 of his glass lantern slides depicting Dubuque and a few of the surrounding communities are now in the collections of the Loras College Center for Dubuque History. These include Sunday school parades, churches, schools, buildings, steamboats, rural scenes, road construction, and some unique images of train wrecks, Union Park, and the horse racing track at Nutwood Park. Constructed in 1884, the church building is brick with a stone foundation and a short brick and white wooden steeple. There is an ornate cross on top of the steeple. The parsonage is a two story white frame home. An out building seems to be attached to the home by a short breezeway. A corner stone indicates that the main church building was constructed in 1884. The modest sized church faces the unpaved main street of Sherrill, Iowa. Arched windows framed in white wood, and a steeple with a cross on top may be seen. Steps lead to the front door. A two story white frame home, identified by the photographer as the parsonage for the Lutheran pastor and his family, has been built beside the church. Several large trees that have been heavily pruned are visible along the street. A telephone pole may be seen near the house. Title A name given to the resource [Sherrill Mount House in Sherrill, Iowa] Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Loemker, Herman J., 1868-1937 Description An account of the resource Constructed in Mid 19th Century Revival Style, a three story, limestone stone building known as The Sherrill Mount House is visible near a curve along the Main Street of Sherrill, Iowa. Sherrill Mound Road intersects with Main Street at the front, left side of this structure. According to the website for the Black Horse Inn (the present name for the structure which operates as a Bed and Breakfast) and entry number 02000760 in the National Register of Historic Places, this structure was built in 1856 and was operated for many years as a road house. It also functioned at various times as a post office, and also housed a dance hall on the second floor. The architect was Peter Fries. Mr. Fries was born in Prussia in 1814 and came to the United States in 1841. He was the first postmaster of Sherrill's Mount. Across the street may be seen a small brick building which was the local bank. An automobile is parked along the side of the street in the foreground of the image.
