    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[A view looking west, of the passenger bridge across the Mississippi. Known as the &quot;High&quot; or &quot;Wagon&quot; bridge, this structure opened in 1887 as the first passenger bridge between Dunleith (East Dubuque) and the Key City. It was torn down when the Julien Dubuque bridge was opened in 1943. Two buggies, each pulled by one horse, are proceeding west across the bridge. Steam or smoke pouring from a smoke stack of the Dubuque Star Brewing Company is visible in the background. Portions of a railroad bridge built close to the passenger bridge may be seen to the right of the passenger bridge.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[A man dressed in a suit, white shirt, tie and bowler hat is standing in a north-facing profile view on the railroad bridge across the Mississippi River. The bridge officially opened on New Year&#039;s Day, 1869 at a cost of over one million dollars. It has been remodeled, but is still in operation today. The image was taken from the east side of the River. A portion of the passenger bridge across the Mississippi River may be seen on the left side of the image. A small stone structure located on the west shore of the River is visible underneath, and to the left of the floor of the passenger bridge.     <dcterms:description><![CDATA[An engine, coal tender and one car may be seen a few feet from the entrance to the train tunnel in East Dubuque, Illinois. The numbers “1190” are visible on the side of the tender. The track curves slightly just before the tunnel entrance. A man is leaning out of the engine window, looking back at a rail road employee, who is dressed in a uniform and cap. This gentleman, with his hands clasped behind his back, is walking towards the engine. Steam is coming from dual engine smoke stacks. The tunnel entrance is arched, and constructed of native limestone. To the immediate left of the entrance is a small shed. A sign that reads “RAIL ROAD CROSSING LOOK OUT FOR …. CARS” has been erected near the shed. The number 1256 is written on a label that has been stuck to the lower left corner of the slide.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Near East Dubuque, Illinois, a steam engine belching black smoke, is emerging from a tunnel which has been constructed through a limestone bluff. The East Dubuque railroad tunnel still exists today. Blasted through the cliffs in 1868, rock from the tunnel was used for railroad bridge supports. Electrical or telephone lines and poles may be seen extending across the top of the bluff. One man, dressed in a white shirt, black vest, pants and hat, is standing to the right of the tunnel entrance. Across the tracks may be seen a small shed, and an elevated sign that reads “Railroad crossing watch out for cars.” The number 1257 is written on a label that has been stuck to the lower left corner of the slide.]]></dcterms:description>
