Sherrill Mound Road intersects with Main Street at the front, left side of this structure. According to the website for the Black Horse Inn (the present name for the structure which operates as a Bed and Breakfast) and entry number 02000760 in the National Register of Historic Places, this structure was built in 1856 and was operated for many years as a road house. It also functioned at various times as a post office, and also housed a dance hall on the second floor. The architect was Peter Fries. Mr. Fries was born in Prussia in 1814 and came to the United States in 1841. He was the first postmaster of Sherrill's Mount. Across the street may be seen a small brick building which was the local bank. An automobile is parked along the side of the street in the foreground of the image.
