Dubuque, Iowa.” Hanging on the wall behind Mr. Hayes is a large poster with numerous black and white images of rural and urban scenes. Partially covering these images is another sheet with small advertisements or cartoons. Two plaques hang on a wall between the two windows. He is looking at a woman who is seated at a roll-top desk. An open ledger or record book and a telephone are on the desk. Visible on the desk behind the ledger and telephone is a sign that reads ”Dubuque Fire and Marine Insurance Company.” Numerous lists written in longhand have been pinned to the side of the counter nearest the desk. One is leaning against the counter and holding a cigar. The other two men are each seated at large work tables. Numerous documents are on the table in the foreground including one stamped “Secretary of State,” and another with the word “Drainage” printed on the cover. An adding machine on a stand can be seen at the rear of the room, and a spittoon is on the floor between the work tables. What appears to be the top of a calendar advertising &quot;M. J. McCullough Insurance&quot; is pinned to the wall to the right of the older man. Next to the younger man is a cash register and an ornate stained-glass partition is visible behind him. Hanging from the ornate partition wall is a sign for “Chew Sen Sen Gum” and another that reads “Ice Cold Soft Drinks” and “We sell Crown-Fer-Lac, Superior in Buttermilk, Crown Dairy Company.” A clock may be seen above the partition. A small lamp with a glass shade is on the counter next to the cash register and another light is hanging from the ceiling.  The number “9” has been written on the emulsion side of the negative and is visible in the upper right corner of the picture.
